Welcome to the Britain in Print timeline.
The Britain in Print timeline tool is designed to assist in giving an overview of the context in which print spread throughout Europe and, in particular in Britain, from the publication of Gutenberg’s Bible up to 1700.
You can use the arrow buttons to move left and right along the timeline and select any year between 1450 and 1700, then click on the highlighted year that interests you. Alternatively, you can enter a date in the search box and click search to go directly to that year.
The buttons under the timeline allow you to define specific areas of context. For example, the Europe in Print button will display developments in printing on mainland Europe.
The Spread of Print panel on the right hand side illustrates how printing spread through the British Isles, with each town or city’s first publication between 1477 and 1700 being displayed on the map. You can click the link to view further information on the publication.
