Antony & Cleopatra
Britain in Print
Act 1, scene 1 - lines 1-56
Opening scene from Shakespeare's 'Antony and Cleopatra'. First Folio edition, 1623. Glasgow University Library.

In the opening lines of the play, Philo describes Antony as a once great warrior now weakened by the power Cleopatra has over him. This section will examine the structure of Philo's speech and what effect it might have on our judgement of Antony's character. The way in which Cleopatra addresses Antony in the opening scene will also be examined in this section.
