About the Library Durham University Library's large early printed book collections include almost 12,000 pre-1700 British items. Most are already on its database and COPAC (as a result of previous externally funded projects), but approximately 2,300 have still to be added. Some of these are unique, many are rare, and a very large proportion are the only copies available in the North-East of England, so that they form an important regional resource.
Collection Highlights Collection 1: The subject range of Durham's collection is wide, taking in travel, topography, atlases, conduct books, cryptography, early Quaker publications, dictionaries and grammatical works as well as law, literature, science and theology. Popish Plot literature and controversial pamphleteering from the period of the Glorious Revolution are particular strengths, and provide many of the unique items. Notable scientific works include two variant copies of the first edition of Newton's Principia (1687).
