The public library service in Leeds has achieved Beacon Status – one of only eight authorities in the country to do so.
Collection 1: There are three significant special collections housed in the Central Library: the Porton, a holding of ca. 5,000 books, journals and pamphlets relating to the Jewish people, their history and faith; The Gascoigne, a collection of ca. 3,000 books of British military and naval history with some biographical and topographical material; and the Gott bequest, a collection of ca. books and journals covering gardening, botany and related subjects. The pre-1700 material included in Britain in Print belongs to the Gott Bequest, together with a number of separate items covering a variety of subject fields.
